Born in Guymon, Oklahoma, Richard was raised on Elvis and Ray Charles. He played trombone for 3 years. Started his first band, Express,  in 1969 and opened for Big Brother & The Holding Company.

Joined Poco in 1991 and toured with the band throughout the nineties.
